Preparing for the winter
means making sure your car is equipped for the right weather. Winter weather tyres offer better grip in wet and dry condidtions below 7°C.
Standard tyres wear quicker when the outside temperature drops below 7°C, that's why in most European countries it is common practice for drivers to fit winter weather tyres in late autumn and to revert back to standard in the late spring.
The cold hard facts
When the temperature drops below 7°C the tread compound in normal tyres begins to harden and gives you less grip. Modern rubber compound technology and advances in tread design mean that today's winter weather tyres reduce this hardening effect, providing higher levels of road safety on cold and damp road surfaces.
Winter weather tyres demo
Watch the video below to see how you can stay safe this winter with Toyota's specially designed tyres.
Winter Weather Tyres FAQs:
- Aren't winter weather tyres only for when it really snows heavily? Definitely not. All modern winter weather tyres are designed for optimal safety below 7°C, in the cold, wet, ice and snow. So although they will afford much higher levels of traction in snowy conditions, they offer superior performance in all winter conditions.
- Do I need to replace all my tyres with winter weather tyres if I only have a from wheel drive car? Yes, with the improved grip available from winter weather tyres, it is essential that all four tyres be replaced at the same time. The car may skid or be more difficult to control if only two winter weather tyres are fitted to one of the axles.
- When driving on winter weather tyres can I drive at normal speed? Winter weather tyres, by design may have a slightly lower speed rating than standard tyres. For example a winter weather tyre that has an H rating has a maximum speed of 131mph, this should not compromise your driving in winter conditions.
- Do winter weather tyres wear out quicker? No, winter weather tyres are designed to perform and last better in colder conditions.
- When should I change back to my standard tyres? It is recommended that in March, when average temperatures should be nearing 7°C in the morning, you should change back to standard tyres.
- What's the best way to store my standard tyres during the winter? Each tyre should be stored in its own bag, making it easier and cleaner to store at home. It is recommended that you stack your tyres so that they are lying flat on the ground horizontally. If you would like to discuss Winter Weather Tyre storage recommendations, please contact your local Centre.
- Will Winter Weather Tyres cost me more money?Investing in Winter Weather Tyres and alternating between them and your standard tyres can increase the lifespan of both sets, saving you money by requiring replacements less frequently.
Ensuring that your tyres
are in good condition and right for your car means better safety, fuel efficiency and all-round driving performance and to keep them that way, we offer a free puncture repair service on all Toyota vehicles if we feel it's safe to do so. You don't even need to book an appointment, just pop in anytime.
The law requires that tyres fitted to your vehicle are in good condition and for each and every tyre offence there is a maximum fine of £2,500 and a compulsory driving licence endorsement of 3 penalty points.
Key points to bear in mind:
- The legal minimum tyre tread depth for cars is 1.6mm in a continuous band throughout the central three-quarters of the tread width, throughout the whole of the tyre circumference (see illustration on right)
- The tyre must be suitably inflated for the purpose the vehicle is being used
- The tyre must not have a cut, in excess of 25mm or 10% of the tyre section width whichever is the greater, which is deep enough to reach the tyre's internal structure
- The tyre must not have a lump, bulge or tear caused by separation or partial failure of its structure
- The tyre must not have any ply or cord exposed
It is a good idea to check the condition of your tyres regularly. Check the tread depth, tyre pressure and complete a thorough visual inspection to ensure that you are legally compliant. If you are in any doubt about the condition of your tyres, have them inspected by an expert at your local Toyota Centre or Service Outlet.
Our tyres are competitively priced and we stock a wide range whatever make or model of Toyota you have, from traditional radial tyres, and a variety of tyre manufacturers to run flat tyres featuring new technology that offers improved safety and additional mobility in the event of air loss. If we don't have the precise tyre you need, we can usually get it delivered on the next day.
